Costa Mesa, California

The first inhabitants of Costa Mesa were the Indians who settled on the bluff.

With the coming of the Spaniards came the Mission period. This saw the building of the missions and the attempts to convert the Indians to Christianity.

Estancia

The original adobe of Estancia was built around this time to provide housing for the Spanish cattlemen. It also served from 1820 to 1823 as a rest stop for the padres in their journeys between Mission San Gabriel and Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Estancia   After the Mission era, the old holdings based on the original Spanish land grants were divided and the Estancia adobe became the property of Don Diego Sepulveda.

With the end of the era of Spanish Dons, land changed ownership several times.

The area around Costa Mesa developed as a result of the losses sustained in the failed land-development boom in the 1880's when many landowners were forced to sell.

Today Costa Mesa reflects the vast agriculture and commercial development that occurred after World War II. Costa Mesa became a city in 1953.
