Newport Beach, California

The original inhabitants of the Newport area were the Shoshone Indians who lived along the Pacific coast.

In 1769,Gasper de Portola led an expedition on behalf of King Juan Carlos III to explore California and lay claim to the lands for Spain. These later became part of the Spanish land grants.

"Pride of Newport"

Newport Beach Pavilion In 1870, a river steamer named "The Vaquero" under the command of Captain Samuel Dunnells arrived at upper Newport Bay at what is known as Old Landing.

This event changed the future of the bay which had previously been considered too dangerous for travel.
James and Robert McFadden, landowners, saw the potential in this development and moved their shipping business to the oceanfront from the inner shore of the bay.

In 1888 the McFaddens built a wharf that stretched from the bay to the ocean, allowing for deep water dockage.
