The original inhabitants of the Newport area
were the Shoshone Indians who lived along the Pacific coast.
In 1769,Gasper de Portola led an expedition on behalf of King Juan
Carlos III to explore California and lay claim to the lands for
Spain. These later became part of the Spanish land grants. |

In 1870, a river steamer named "The
Vaquero" under the command of Captain Samuel Dunnells arrived at upper
Newport Bay at what is known as Old Landing.
This event changed the future of the bay which had previously been considered
too dangerous for travel. |

|
James and Robert McFadden, landowners,
saw the potential in this development and moved their shipping business
to the oceanfront from the inner shore of the bay.
In 1888 the McFaddens built a wharf that stretched from the bay to the ocean,
allowing for deep water dockage. |
