The Acreage was originally a large tract of swampland whose only inhabitants were snakes, birds, and other wildlife.
Sam Friedland, founder of the Royal Palm Beach Colony, bought the Indian Trail Ranch in the late 1950's to use as orange groves. This venture failed and much of the land was sold to other citrus companies. |

The remaining land was designated as homesites for those who wanted a rural lifestyle.
Over the years the development of the Acreage has been governed by its two biggest problems - drainage and road construction. |

Today the Acreage extends from Royal Palm Beach on the south to Northlake Blvd. on the north and as far west as the orange groves.
It is now home to about 40,000 residents - a testament to the long struggle to create homesteads out of swamps. |
