Loxahatchee, which derives
its name from an Indian dialect for "turtle creek", was
founded in 1917 by George Bensel.
With the passage of the Swamp Land Act of 1850, investors bought large
tracts of land for development. |

One of the projects envisioned
was the construction of a canal by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This work was completed in 1917 and Bensel, a sales manager for Southern
State Land and Timber Company, envisioned a community along the waterway. |
